The business case for training within industry (twi)
“If companies are serious about developing skills and making improvements, then I urge them to study up on TWI concepts.” - (Art Smalley, President, Art of Lean, Shingo Prize Research Award Winner, 2003)
TWI (Training Within Industry)
TWI is a programme that was set up by the US government during the Second World War, when American industry was faced with the prospect of training millions of new workers, fast and effectively. The programme had to be highly practical.
TWI is focused on three essential skills that every supervisor should have. These are Job Instruction (JI), Job Methods (JM), and Job Relations (JR). TWI methods were adopted by Ohno in 1951 and became the foundation of the Toyota Production System.
JI is how to quickly instruct workers to do a task correctly. JM is how to improve a job and reduce waste. JR is how to deal with people and team issues.
Some 65 years later, JI is still used virtually unchanged at Toyota. JM and JR have been modified but the principles remain. TWI instruction is undergoing a renaissance in the USA with hundreds of companies taking up the highly effective and massively proven methods.
